Writing a tweet that refuses to fit, an SMS campaign where every extra segment costs money, or a meta description that Google will truncate? Generic length checks lie, because every platform counts differently — this counter applies each platform's real rules.

Pick a platform and type or paste: the character count, the limit and the characters remaining update on every keystroke, with a progress bar that turns red as soon as you cross the limit. For Twitter/X, Instagram captions, LinkedIn posts, YouTube titles and meta descriptions, characters are counted as Unicode code points, so an emoji or a Chinese ideogram counts as one.

SMS mode does the honest carrier math: if your text only uses the GSM-7 alphabet, one message holds 160 characters (153 per segment once it splits); a single character outside that alphabet — a smart quote, an emoji, most non-Latin letters — switches the whole message to Unicode (UCS-2), dropping the capacity to 70 (67 per segment). The tool shows the detected encoding, the number of segments and how many characters are left before the next one.
