The Chinese zodiac assigns each year an animal from a twelve-year cycle — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig — combined with one of five elements that changes every two years, giving the full sixty-year cycle of the traditional calendar.
The catch that most quick calculators ignore: the Chinese year does not start on January 1. It begins at the Lunar New Year, which falls between late January and late February. Anyone born in those weeks may belong to the previous year's animal. This calculator uses a table of exact Lunar New Year dates from 1924 to 2043, so the boundary is handled precisely.
The result shows your animal with its emoji, the element (wood, fire, earth, metal or water), the yin or yang polarity of the year, and a short portrait of the animal's traditional character.
Everything is computed locally in your browser from a built-in table — no lookups, no servers, no stored dates. Consider it a friendly introduction to a calendar tradition that is far richer than one animal per year.
