Gematria is the ancient practice of reading words as numbers: every letter of the Hebrew alphabet carries a numerical value, and words whose values coincide are held to share a hidden connection. The same idea was later adapted to the Latin alphabet in several popular ciphers.

This calculator accepts Hebrew and Latin text in the same field and detects the alphabet automatically. Hebrew letters are summed by the standard values (mispar hechrachi, with א=1 through ת=400 and final forms counted as their base letters), by ordinal position (mispar siduri) and by the reduced small value (mispar katan).

Latin letters get three widespread ciphers: the simple ordinal A=1…Z=26, the so-called English gematria where the ordinal value is multiplied by six, and the reduced Pythagorean value folded to a single digit.

Every calculation happens locally in your browser, and the letter-by-letter trace under the results lets you check the arithmetic. A classic test: the Hebrew word שלום sums to 376 in the standard cipher.
