About this tool

This page opens the chord builder with D major already selected and runs it for you — the seven diatonic chords of the key are listed above the moment the page loads.

D major carries two sharps, F♯ and C♯, over the notes D, E, F♯, G, A, B, C♯. Its chords are D, Em, F♯m, G, A, Bm and C♯ diminished — a bright key loved by fiddlers and guitarists alike, since D, G and A all ring with open strings.

The full tool builds the diatonic chord map for any of the twelve roots in major or minor, labels every degree with its Roman numeral and harmonic role, and runs entirely in your browser.

Example. Selecting C major lists I tonic C major, ii supertonic Dm minor, iii mediant Em minor, IV subdominant F major, V dominant G major, vi submediant Am minor, and vii° leading/subtonic Bdim diminished.

Limit. Only the seven diatonic triads of major or natural minor are built, so seventh chords and modes other than those two never appear.
