A roof's shingled surface is always bigger than the building's footprint, because the slope stretches a flat area out over a longer, tilted plane. Roofers don't guess at how much bigger — they use a pitch factor, a multiplier derived from simple trigonometry. A roof pitch is expressed as rise over a 12-inch run (a '6:12' roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches it runs horizontally), which describes a right triangle: the run is 12, the rise is whatever the pitch says, and the sloped surface follows the hypotenuse. The pitch factor is that hypotenuse divided by the run: sqrt(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12. For a 6:12 pitch, that's sqrt(36 + 144) ÷ 12 = sqrt(180) ÷ 12 ≈ 13.416 ÷ 12 ≈ 1.118 — matching the pitch-factor tables printed in roofing estimating guides. Multiply a flat footprint by that factor and you get the real area of shingles needed to cover the actual sloped plane.

This calculator lets you build up the footprint from multiple sections — a main roof rectangle, an attached garage, a porch — each entered as length × width or as a direct area if you already measured it, summed automatically. Once the sloped area is known, a waste percentage is added (10-15% is the commonly used range, higher for roofs with lots of cuts) before converting to the units the trade actually orders in: a 'square' is 100 square feet of coverage, and shingles are bundled into fractions of a square for handling — 3 bundles per square is the standard packaging for most architectural (laminated) shingles, though 3-tab shingles and some other products package differently, which is why the bundles-per-square figure here is adjustable rather than fixed. The calculator rounds up to a whole square before converting to bundles, since suppliers sell by the square or bundle, not a fraction of one.

Being honest about what this tool doesn't model matters as much as the math it does: a real roof with hips, valleys, dormers, skylights and multiple pitches on the same structure has meaningfully more waste from angled cuts than a simple footprint-times-pitch-factor estimate captures, and steeper roofs are also harder and slower to work on, which affects labor cost but not the material math shown here. Treat the result as a solid materials-ordering estimate for a straightforward gable or hip roof, and add extra margin — or get a professional measurement — for a roof with a complicated layout.
