About this tool
Type a phrase and run it. The text is lowercased, and commas, periods, and hyphens become spaces, so twenty-one is the two words twenty and one. The word and is skipped. Each remaining word is looked up in the English list on this page: zero through nineteen, then twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, and ninety. Those values add into a current group. The word hundred multiplies that group by 100, and an empty group before hundred counts as 1, so hundred alone is 100. thousand, million, billion, and trillion multiply the current group by 1000, 1000000, 1000000000, or 1000000000000, add it to the total, and clear the group.
one hundred twenty is 1 times 100, plus 20, which is 120. one hundred and twenty is the same 120, because and is ignored. thirty is 30. two thousand twenty five is 2 times 1000, plus 20, plus 5, which is 2025. A word that is not in the list is skipped rather than failing the whole line. If the sum is 0 and the text does not contain zero, the result box says the phrase could not be parsed. The word zero itself returns 0.
Currency is not a feature of the list. dollar, cent, euro, and hryvnia are unknown tokens and are skipped, so they do not create a money amount or a decimal. There is no word for a decimal point and no fraction path. The Ukrainian page uses a separate Ukrainian list, including сто through дев'ятсот. Every other language of the site still uses this English list, because the switch is Ukrainian versus everything else. The phrase stays in the browser.
Example. The English phrase one hundred twenty converts to 120. thirty converts to 30, and two thousand twenty five converts to 2025.
Limit. The English page uses the English word list. Ukrainian words are used only when the page language is uk. Currency words, fractions, and the word point are not scales. A token missing from the list is skipped.
How do I turn words into numbers?
The English list covers zero through nineteen, the tens from twenty through ninety, and the scales hundred, thousand, million, billion, and trillion. one hundred twenty multiplies 1 by 100 and then adds 20, which is 120. Hyphens, commas, and periods become spaces first, so twenty-one is 21. The word and is ignored, so one hundred and twenty is also 120.
Does it read dollars, cents, or hryvnias?
Those words are not in the list, so they are skipped rather than parsed as money. There is no fraction or decimal path. A sentence that produces 0 and does not contain the word zero is reported as unparsed. zero itself returns 0.
Which language is the word list?
On this English page the list is English. The Ukrainian page uses the Ukrainian cardinals, including the hundreds from сто through дев'ятсот. Every other language of the site still runs the English list, because the switch is uk versus everything else.
