French Bulldog Age in Human Years — Dog Age Calc

Convert your dog's age to human years with two published models — the AVMA/AKC size-class table and the 2019 UCSD epigenetic formula — plus a life-stage label.

Size-class table (AVMA/AKC)

human years

First year = 15 human years, second +9, then +4 to +6 per year depending on adult size.

Epigenetic clock (UCSD, 2019)

human years

Research formula 16 × ln(age) + 31 from a DNA methylation study of Labrador Retrievers; defined for dogs aged 1 year and older.

Life stage:

Both models are population-level estimates for healthy dogs, not a veterinary assessment. Breed, weight and preventive care all shift individual aging — ask your vet about your dog's life stage.

This page opens the dog age calculator with the small size class preselected for the French Bulldog, which typically weighs 8–13 kg. On the AVMA/AKC scale a Frenchie ages like other small dogs: 15 human years in year one, 9 in year two, then about 4 per year — so a 6-year-old French Bulldog maps to roughly 40 human years.

Honesty matters with this breed: while individual Frenchies often live 10–12 years, large UK veterinary studies (VetCompass) have reported much lower median lifespans for the breed as a whole, partly because the population skews young and partly because of serious hereditary problems. Flat-faced anatomy brings brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), and the breed is also prone to spinal disc disease and skin-fold infections.

The practical consequence: a French Bulldog's calendar age understates its health risk, so treat labored breathing, heat intolerance and hind-leg weakness as veterinary issues at any age, and start senior-style checkups around age 8. The epigenetic estimate shown beside the table is extrapolated from Labrador data — a useful research-based curve, not a Frenchie-specific measurement.
