About this tool
The English page spells with the English lists. Ones run from one through nineteen, tens from twenty through ninety, and the scale words are thousand, million, billion, and trillion. Groups of three digits are joined with a comma and a space. Inside a group, a hundreds digit is followed by the word and when anything remains, so 123 is one hundred and twenty-three. A tens-and-ones pair is hyphenated, so 21 is twenty-one. Zero is the word zero. The capitalize checkbox is on by default, so the first letter of that result becomes One. Clear it and the same number stays one hundred and twenty-three. The Ukrainian page is the exception: it uses the Ukrainian speller. Every other language of this site uses the English speller described here.
With currency set to none, which is the menu's first choice, a fractional part is not rounded to hundredths. The script keeps the digits you typed after the point, drops trailing zeros, and spells each remaining digit. 1.5 becomes one point five. 1.50 becomes one point five as well, because the trailing zero is stripped. 1.05 becomes one point zero five. With USD, EUR, or UAH selected, the fraction is instead rounded to hundredths and spoken as cents or kopiykas. 1.5 USD is one dollar and fifty cents. 2 USD is two dollars. 1 EUR is one euro, and 1 UAH is one hryvnia. The major and minor names are singular only when that count is exactly 1. A hundredth that rounds to 100 carries one into the integer, so 1.999 USD is two dollars, not one dollar and one hundred cents.
The input may use a comma as the decimal mark. Commas are turned into dots before parsing, and the value has to be a non-negative number. A blank, a word, or a minus sign stops with Please enter a valid positive number. The scale list ends at trillion. A parsed value of 1e15 or more, one thousand trillion, stops with Numbers past 999 trillion are not supported. Before that check existed, a number that large fell off the end of the scale list and could be spelled as a small word. 999 trillion is still inside the list. 1000 trillion is not. The Ukrainian speller has the same ceiling and the same cent carry. Its no-currency decimals still use the Ukrainian 'цілих і … сотих' wording rather than spelling each digit. Nothing you type is stored or sent. There is no cheque-layout line, no ordinals such as first or second, and no scale past trillion. Scientific notation is parsed by the number reader, but the digit-by-digit decimal path only sees a plain string of digits after one dot, so a value you type as 1e-3 is not spelled as point zero zero one. Type the digits you want spoken. The result is written into the output box, and the copy button copies that box.
Example. 123 with currency set to none and the capital box on is One hundred and twenty-three. 1.5 with no currency is One point five. 1.5 USD is One dollar and fifty cents. 2 USD is Two dollars.
Limit. English scales stop at trillion. A value of 1e15 or more is rejected. No-currency decimals spell the digits you typed. Currency amounts round to hundredths and carry 100 cents into the next unit.
