VO2 max — the maximum volume of oxygen your body can use per minute per kilogram of body weight — is the single most cited number in exercise science for cardiorespiratory fitness. The gold-standard measurement uses a treadmill or bike test with a mask analyzing every breath, equipment almost nobody has at home. Field tests trade some precision for accessibility: run or walk a fixed distance, plug the result into a validated regression equation, and get a usable estimate. This calculator implements two of the most widely cited field-test formulas as separate modes, each using exactly the inputs its original study specified, rather than forcing every test through one generic equation.

The first mode is the Cooper 12-Minute Run Test, published by Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper in 1968 for the U.S. Air Force as a fast way to screen aerobic fitness in large groups. Run or jog for exactly 12 minutes, covering as much distance as you safely can, and record the distance in meters. Cooper's formula converts it directly: VO2max = (distance in meters − 504.9) ÷ 44.73. Cover 2,400 meters and the formula returns about 42.4 ml/kg/min — a solid recreational-runner result. The test remains a staple of military, police and school fitness assessments precisely because it needs nothing but a track and a stopwatch.

The second mode is the Rockport 1-Mile Walk Test, developed by Kline, Porcari, Hintermeister, Freedson, Ward, McCarron, Ross and Rippe and published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise in 1987. Walk one mile as fast as you can without breaking into a run, note your time to the nearest quarter minute, and take your pulse immediately at the finish. The published regression is VO2max = 132.853 − 0.0769 × weight(lb) − 0.3877 × age − 0.1565 × heart rate − 3.2649 × time(min) + 6.315 × sex(1 for male, 0 for female) — reproduced here with every coefficient exactly as published, weight converted to pounds because that is the unit the equation was derived in. Because it uses a submaximal walking effort, Rockport is often preferred for beginners, older adults or anyone advised against an all-out run.

Either formula only tells you something once you know what a typical range looks like, so the calculator places your result into an age- and sex-banded fitness category from Poor to Superior. We built this table to be internally consistent and to decline sensibly with age and differ sensibly by sex, modeled on the general shape of published field-test norms — but we say so plainly rather than passing it off as a verbatim official chart, since we cannot guarantee our numbers match any single published source to the decimal.
