Wallpaper Calculator — Rolls Needed, Pattern-Repeat Waste Included

Tile and paint calculators size an order from a flat area and a flat waste percentage, but wallpaper doesn't work that way — it's sold in strips cut from a roll, and a patterned roll forces every strip to start at the same point in the design so the seams line up. This calculator uses the real strip-based arithmetic a decorator uses: strips needed is the total wall length divided by the roll's width, rounded up, and rolls needed is however many rolls it takes to cut that many strips at the roll's length.
The pattern repeat is where the real waste comes from, and it's a genuinely different mechanism from tile-calculator's flat cutting allowance. With no repeat (plain paper, or a random/tumbling match), each strip only needs to be as long as the wall is tall. With a repeat, every strip must be cut so the pattern lines up with the one next to it — which means each strip's usable length gets rounded UP to the next whole multiple of the repeat, even though the wall height never changed. A 64 cm repeat on a 2.5 m wall doesn't need a 2.5 m strip; it needs a 2.56 m strip (four full repeats), and that extra 6 cm is cut off and thrown away on every single strip.
That per-strip rounding compounds across a whole roll: a longer strip means fewer strips fit on each roll, which means more rolls are needed for the same wall, which means more total material bought versus what's actually hanging on the wall. This calculator shows both numbers side by side — total wallpaper bought (rolls × roll length) and what's actually used (strips × wall height) — as a waste percentage, so a large pattern repeat's real cost is visible before you buy, instead of hidden inside a vague "order 10-15% extra" rule that doesn't distinguish a small repeat from a large one.
A worked comparison on a 12 m run of wall at 2.5 m high with a standard 53 cm × 10 m roll: with no pattern repeat, each strip is exactly 2.5 m, four strips fit per roll, and 6 rolls cover the wall at about 4% waste (roll ends only). Switch to a 64 cm pattern repeat and each strip rounds up to 2.56 m, only three strips fit per roll, and the same wall now needs 8 rolls — about 28% waste. Same wall, same height, more than four times the waste, purely from the pattern repeat's rounding.
