This page opens the calculator with “markup %” already selected — enter what an item costs you and the markup you want to add, and it returns the selling price, the profit and the margin the same sale produces.
Markup measures profit against cost: markup = profit ÷ cost × 100. Worked example: a product costs 40 and you apply a 50% markup, so the price is 40 × 1.5 = 60 and the profit is 20 — but the margin of that very sale is 20 ÷ 60 = 33.33%, not 50%. The two percentages describe the same money from different sides.
That is the whole margin-vs-markup difference: markup answers “how much do I add on top of cost?”, margin answers “what share of the price is profit?”. Because revenue is always larger than cost on a profitable sale, the markup number is always the bigger of the two — this calculator prints both so nothing gets mixed up.
