Mulch Bags Calculator — How Many Bags You Need
Calculate how much mulch, topsoil, compost or gravel you need from area and depth — cubic yards, cubic feet, estimated weight and bags to buy.

This page opens the calculator preset to mulch, with the bag count front and centre: enter your area (or length × width) and a depth — 2 to 4 inches is typical — and the tool tells you how many standard 2 cubic foot bags to buy, rounded up so you don't run out mid-job.
The bag count comes straight from the cubic feet figure: divide by 2 (the size of a standard mulch bag) and round up, because a partial bag still means buying a whole one. The same result is also shown in cubic yards and cubic feet in case your supplier sells mulch in bulk instead of bags, plus an estimated weight based on mulch's typical bulk density of roughly 350-450 lb per cubic yard — light and fluffy compared with soil or gravel.
This is the full calculator, just preconfigured for mulch — switch to topsoil, compost or gravel at any time, or change the depth for a thicker or thinner layer. Everything runs locally in your browser from static figures, with no uploads and no account needed.
