Topsoil Calculator — Cubic Yards, Weight & Bags

Calculate how much mulch, topsoil, compost or gravel you need from area and depth — cubic yards, cubic feet, estimated weight and bags to buy.

A typical mulch layer is 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) deep; topsoil and compost beds are often deeper.

This page opens the calculator with topsoil preselected as the material: enter your area (directly, or as length × width) and how deep you want the layer, and get the volume in cubic yards and cubic feet, an estimated weight, and a bag count for standard 2 cubic foot bags.

Topsoil is far denser than mulch — its typical bulk density runs roughly 2,000-2,200 lb per cubic yard, close to a full ton, which is why the same volume of topsoil costs more to move and deliver than the equivalent amount of mulch. That density is only ever a typical figure: screened topsoil, compost-blended topsoil and wet topsoil all weigh differently, so the tool labels the weight as an estimate rather than a guaranteed delivery weight.

The complete calculator is available right here, simply preset to topsoil — switch to mulch, compost or gravel whenever you need to. All the math runs locally in your browser from static figures, with nothing uploaded and no sign-up required.
