The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level maps a text to a US school grade: 0.39 × (words per sentence) + 11.8 × (syllables per word) − 15.59. A score of 8 means an average eighth-grader should follow it; most general-audience writing aims for 6-9.
The formula is calibrated for English and syllables are counted heuristically, so treat scores for other languages as indicative. The full tool also shows Flesch Reading Ease, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman-Liau and ARI — all computed locally in your browser.
