"How many kilometers is 10,000 steps?" and "how many steps in a mile?" are two versions of the same question, and this calculator answers both. Enter a step count to get the distance in kilometers and miles, or flip to distance mode and enter a distance to get the steps needed to cover it — one tool instead of switching between a converter and a mental estimate.
The number that actually decides the answer is stride length, and the calculator handles it two ways. If you know your real stride — measured by counting steps over a known distance — enter it directly in meters or feet. Otherwise, enter your height and the tool estimates stride as height × 0.414, a widely used approximation for average adult walking gait; it is clearly labeled as an estimate, not a personalized measurement, because pace, leg length and terrain all shift the real number.
Once distance is known, entering your body weight adds an estimated calorie burn using a simple MET-based formula (3.5 METs for a moderate walk, calories = METs × weight in kg × time in hours), with time derived from an assumed steady walking pace. Leave weight blank and the calorie line is skipped entirely rather than showing a guess with no input behind it.
This is a conversion and estimation tool, not a fitness tracker: it has no idea how fast you actually walked or how uneven the ground was, so treat the distance and calorie figures as a solid planning estimate rather than an exact log. For a route measured in an actual pace rather than steps, the running pace calculator covers minutes-per-kilometer, finish times and splits; for converting the resulting distance into other units, see the length converter.
