This page opens the calculator with the remainder form of the answer front and centre: enter a dividend and a divisor and it performs the schoolbook procedure, drawing the full bracket and reporting the result as a quotient with a remainder — for 1234 ÷ 56 that is 22 r 2, because 22 × 56 = 1232 and 1234 − 1232 = 2.

Answers with remainders are how long division is first taught, before decimals are introduced: the remainder is simply what is left after the divisor has fitted a whole number of times. Every multiply, subtract and bring-down that leads to it is drawn in the bracket and narrated in words, so you can check your own working step against step.
