This page opens the paint calculator in direct-area mode, set up for a ceiling. The area is the easiest in the house to compute: just length × width of the room — a 4 × 5 m room has a 20 m² ceiling. There are no doors or windows to subtract, so the openings fields are preset to zero; simply type the area and pick your coats.
One coat is often enough when repainting a white ceiling that is in good condition with a dedicated ceiling paint: 20 m² at 11 m² per liter is under 2 liters, a single 2.5 L can. Fresh plaster, water stains or a color change call for two coats — about 3.7 liters in this example, so a 2.5 L can plus two 1 L cans, or a 5 L can with reserve.
Ceiling paints are formulated flatter and more drip-resistant than wall paints, and matt finishes hide surface imperfections that raking light would otherwise expose. Coverage on a previously painted, smooth ceiling sits at the good end of the range (11–12 m²/L), while textured or newly skimmed ceilings absorb more — lower the coverage figure if that is your case.
