1.0x is the rate a synthesized voice was tuned for, so it is the setting most people reach for when turning an article, blog post or ebook chapter into something they can listen to while commuting, cooking or exercising: fast enough to get through real reading material at a normal pace, slow enough that pauses, commas and sentence breaks still land naturally.
