Tile Calculator — How Many Tiles You Need

Diagonal layouts need more waste because almost every tile touching a wall is cut at an angle and the triangular offcut is rarely reusable; a straight grid lay only trims full tiles along the outer edges, so 10% covers it.

Buying tile is a two-way guess: order too few and the batch you need to finish may not match on a return trip (dye lots shift between production runs), order too many and the leftovers are dead weight. This calculator replaces the guess with the arithmetic a tile shop actually uses — the area you need to cover, divided by the area of one tile, times a waste allowance for the pieces that get cut and thrown away, rounded up to a whole tile because a store will not sell you a fraction of one.

Enter the room either as length × width or as a direct area, in feet or meters, whichever you measured with. Then pick the tile size: six common sizes are built in (12×12in, 12×24in, 18×18in, 24×24in, 30×30cm and 60×60cm), or switch to custom and type any width and height in inches or centimeters — useful for mosaic sheets, large-format porcelain, or a size sold only by a specific supplier.

Waste allowance covers the tiles that get cut to fit a wall, a doorway or an odd corner and can't be reused. A straight grid lay only trims full tiles along the outer edges, so the standard 10% covers it comfortably; a diagonal (45°) lay cuts nearly every tile that touches a wall at an angle, and the triangular offcut is rarely large enough to use elsewhere, so it needs closer to 15%. A grout gap field is included for planning spacers and layout lines, but it is shown as information only — it does not change the tile count, because you still need one physical tile per module regardless of the joint width.

The result shows the full calculation — area divided by tile area, times the waste multiplier, rounded up — plus the total area that many tiles actually covers and, if you enter how many tiles come in a box, how many boxes to order. A worked example: a 10 × 10 ft room (100 sq ft) tiled in 12×12in tiles (1 sq ft each) at 10% waste needs 100 ÷ 1 × 1.10 = 110 tiles.
