Walls often need less waste than floors: a backsplash or shower surround is usually a simple rectangle with fewer odd angles than a floor plan full of doorways and cabinetry, so many installers get away with the 10% straight-lay default even with one accent border. The exception is a diagonal or herringbone wall pattern, or a wall broken up by windows, niches and fixtures — switch to 15% waste for those.

Grout choice matters more on walls than floors: wet areas like showers usually call for a narrower joint with epoxy or well-sealed cementitious grout to limit water penetration, while a dry kitchen backsplash has more flexibility.
