White is the single most revealing test color: dead pixels show up as dark specks, and uneven backlighting or discoloration becomes obvious across a bright uniform field. Wipe the screen before judging — a grain of dust on white looks exactly like a dead pixel until it moves.

A white screen is also a genuinely useful light source. At full brightness your display becomes a soft, diffuse lamp: fill light for video calls, an improvised tracing lightbox against the glass, or simply a way to find something under the desk without switching the room lights on.
